The Spent Fuel Interim Storage Facility (KKÁT) is located south of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant site, about 1000 m from route no 6. The modular chamber dry storage facility is designed to temporarily store spent fuel cells of VVER 440 reactors for a period of 50 years.
The storage facility provides fuel protection under the most severe environmental conditions. The fuel cells are stored in storage tubes. The storage tubes themselves are situated in chambers of reinforced concrete, which provide shielding, i.e. biological protection against external radiation. Each chamber can hold 527 storage tubes and fuel cells.
